brad lauster (dot com) redesigned!

Welcome to version 5 (or so) of brad lauster (dot com). I've hidden a lot of contextual information in links and column headings, so look for underlines and let your mouse hover. Enjoy!

This is on the about page, but I thought I should mention it here also: I had a lot of help on the redesign from Joshua Kaufman and the css-d mailing list - especially Mark Newhouse, who was kind enough to build this modified three-column layout for me. Thanks guys!

The idea behind this design, as I mentioned in a comment on peterme.com, is to do less link blogging and more thoughtful writing. I still have some tweaking to do with the design, so we'll see how it goes.

If you have any problems, please post a comment!

Haven't spent enough time here to decide if I like the new version better, but thought you'd like to know that the headings directly under "Chief eXperience Officer in training" are half covered by the colored columns below them.
I'll let you know if I like the redesign after I've had time to play.

Yeah - that might happen if you have your font size jacked up. I'll look for a more reliable way to set the font size in the masthead. Thanks for the heads-up!

Hey, why doesn't this entry show up on your homepage? Wacky.

Hi Joshua,
That's because it's a "Stream of Consciousness" post - which is just another way of saying that it's posted in the major category "Life." All new Stream of Consciousness posts do show up on the home page, but only in the blue area on the right side.

I decided to do that because I think most of my readers come to brad lauster (dot com) for the Experience Design posts - I don't think they care so much about my life, though my parents might disagree :). I also wanted a way to incorporate my silly thoughts into the blog, without taking away from serious stuff that I think most of my readers come here for. So, I stick that stuff in the Stream of Consciousness also.

I'm also planning to start writing more about topics related to the other major categories (listed in the green bar: Entrepreneurial Thoughts, Nutrition, Product Design, Reading, Strategic Thinking, Sustainability and Technology) and I'm hoping that readers will begin to come back for those thoughts too.

A note about how this categorization scheme is implemeneted: Since Movable Type can't do real sub-categorization, I'm taking a manual approach to creating sub-categories. Basically I choose a sub-category for an entry, but also place that entry in a more general "major category." You might get a better idea of the categorization scheme by looking at the Archive page.

Hope that answered your question! Cheers!

Looks great. Haven't been here for a while. It feels good, comfortable, not too "precious" - kinda like your writing style. Wish that I could expand the stream of consciousness section.

ChallisHodge.com has a nice widget for adjusting the font size in his masthead. It's probably a standard widget, but that was the first I had seen it.
